Many islamophobes try to falsely use the Qur’anic verse 9:5, also known as the verse of the sword, to prove that Islam is a violent religion. In this talk Muslim theologian Dr. Yasir Qadhi explains in the video below how mainstream Muslims have understood this particular verse in the past and today.
The verse in question is as follows:
“And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” [Qur’an 9:5]
